On Friday evening, Lechia Gdańsk defeated Jagiellonia Białystok 3:0 in front of their home crowd. After the match, head coach John Carver shared his thoughts on the game.
Match commentary
Of course, the final result is fantastic. The first 45 minutes were perhaps the best football I’ve seen from us so far. We were very aggressive in pressing, we had a great defensive structure, and we created a number of well-organized attacking moves on a difficult pitch. We knew that Jagiellonia would come at us in the second half, and they did, but we defended really well. Alex Paulsen probably had just one intervention to make. I’ve been critical of our defending recently, but after a 3:0 win I’m absolutely delighted with that aspect of our game. Huge credit also goes to Tomas Bobček, who is fighting for the top scorer title but still chose to pass the ball to Aleksandar Cirković. That shows the kind of player he is. He’s not selfish – he’s a team player. That also reflects the character of this group. We beat the possible future Polish champions. I really like the way they play and wish them all the best for the rest of the season.
Camilo Mena left the pitch before the end of the match
He felt a small issue in his hamstring, so we took him off as a precaution. We’ll see in the next 24–48 hours how it develops. He also had a slight back problem before the match, which may have contributed.
Words of appreciation for the fans
I would also like to thank the supporters because they always back us. During the match against Jagiellonia it was the loudest it’s been in quite some time. We need even more of them in the stands supporting us. You could clearly see the connection and the influence we have on each other. It’s not just about me – it’s about everyone who works here.
