Carver: This match fired up the fans

John Carver’s players made a perfect start to the new round by defeating Lech Poznań 3:1. The White-and-Greens’ Saturday evening performance was summed up by the Boss.

Coach’s post-match comments:

I’ll start by saying that I’m pleased not only with the result, but also with the way we played. Sometimes, when you come to face an opponent like this, you can be intimidated. It was also a challenge for me as a coach, because we came to a big club. I think those who were here and those watching at home could enjoy the style both teams presented. This match really fired up the fans, especially Lechia Gdańsk supporters. We have to realise where we played and who we played against. This is the Polish champion and a team still competing in European cups. It’s a matter of pride to compete with such an opponent on equal terms. Moments like this should be enjoyed.

Lechia performed very well defensively against the reigning champions. Was this the team’s best match in that aspect under John Carver?

Definitely, one hundred percent – both with and without the ball. The determination we showed in defence today, as well as the intensity and tempo with which we attacked Lech, prove that. Still, I believe we can improve further.

Camilo Mena did not finish the match. What was the reason?

Just before the substitution he signalled that he was starting to feel a muscle cramp, so it was more of a precautionary change.

Lechia were not intimidated by the hosts and showed quality on the pitch:

I think our confidence is growing day by day. It’s not only about the players, but also the coaching staff. At the same time, we have to be careful not to become overconfident. The match we played shows the potential this team has, but we are still a very young squad.

Under John Carver, Lechia have won two of their three matches against Lech:

Maybe I’m just lucky? Above all, it’s the players’ credit – they deserve the recognition. As a staff, we try to develop the footballers. In the previous match against Lech we were leading 2:0 at half-time and eventually lost 3:4. I’d definitely rather stick with today’s game.
