Matchday 4 of the PKO Bank Polski Ekstraklasa brings the fixture Lechia vs Motor. As usual before a Monday game, head coach John Carver answered journalists’ questions.
On Thursday, August 7, Lechia celebrated its 80th anniversary, with both the coaching staff and players taking part:
It was fantastic. It’s very important for the players and staff to be part of events like this. I was really pleased to see so many women, children, and whole families there – it shows the passion for the club and how much it means to the Gdańsk community, which is great.
On the team’s injury situation:
Bujar is still dealing with his groin problem. It will be a few more weeks before he’s back with us. He’s working closely with the medical staff. Meanwhile, Bogdan Sarnavskyi is recovering from injury. He’s doing everything he can to rejoin training as soon as possible.
On the defensive lineup:
In an ideal world, I’d like to have four central defenders in the squad. Ivan Zhelizko is a short-term option at centre-back. Diaczuk? He’s a young player, and young players make mistakes. He was ‘crushed’ when we came back from the match. He came to my office to apologise. I told him he didn’t need to apologise. He’s a very committed player. He has his qualities and in some aspects is better than others. I just hope he’ll start picking up fewer yellow cards (laughs).
On what kind of match he expects against Motor Lublin:
They’re a team that plays with great energy. They like to play football, they want to play football, and they’re well organised. Coach Stolarski works very well with them. It’s going to be a very tough match, but we need to start picking up points. The way we’re playing is good, but now we need to turn matches in our favour. I believe we will start getting points. Motor’s style of play is similar to what they played last season – and they didn’t have much reason to change, since they played well.
