The Zagłębie – Lechia match will open Matchday 5 of the PKO Bank Polski Ekstraklasa. Before the trip to Lubin, coach John Carver answered questions from the media. The match kicks off on Friday, August 15, at 18:00.
Journalists revisited the match against Motor Lublin, after which Lechia’s play was praised by coach Mateusz Stolarski:
It was nice to hear what coach Stolarski said. We had the chance to talk on the phone for a long time the day after the match. It’s always good when two coaches who live and breathe football can call each other and chat. He gave us a lot of compliments.
The Gdańsk side didn’t have much time to prepare for the match against Zagłębie:
We’re continuing our work. We had to condense and shorten everything. Yesterday and today we’ve been checking how the players are feeling. From a tactical standpoint, it’s very difficult. We have a long journey ahead of us, which also doesn’t help with recovery. I’d like to have more time to prepare. For me, it’s strange that we finish a match on Monday evening and then play the next one on Friday. We as coaches obviously want to play as soon as possible, but we also want time to prepare for the match. Usually, we spend one day working on attack, the next on defense, and we also have video analysis. This time, that’s not possible. We also have to be careful not to overwhelm the players with too much information.
On the squad situation:
We’re still waiting for the final diagnosis regarding Anton Tsarenko. He will either face a long break or undergo surgery. It will be quite a while before he returns.
What kind of Zagłębie the coach expects:
They have a mixed squad — some experienced players who also help the younger ones on the pitch. Obviously, they’ll be playing at home, so there will be some pressure on them, but we want to surprise them.
