Clash in the Podlasie region. Preview of the match between Jagiellonia Białystok and Lechia Gdańsk

Our team will play its next league match on Sunday, 31 August, at the stadium at 1 Słoneczna Street in Białystok. Our team’s opponent will be Jagiellonia, which finished last season’s PKO Bank Polski Ekstraklasa in third place. The match is scheduled to start at 5:30 p.m.

We are approaching the match against Jagiellonia in high spirits after a real football celebration. For our players, this will be another match after winning the Tricity Derby and scoring the first, coveted three points in this season’s PKO Bank Polski Ekstraklasa. A good result in a match so important for the entire Lechia community gives the white-and-green players motivation to continue fighting.

We are delighted with the victory, but also with the fact that we did not concede any goals. As a team, we were calm when in possession of the ball. We talked a lot about this before the match, about keeping a cool head and playing as if it were not a derby – said Lechia coach John Carver after the match against Arka.

As our team’s coach pointed out, the match against Arka was also the first game this season in which our team managed to keep a clean sheet. After personnel problems in the defensive line-up and seventeen goals conceded in just five games, tightening up the defence in the derby is a very good sign for the future. At a press conference before the match against Jagiellonia Białystok, coach John Carver once again emphasised the importance of good defensive play for the overall success of the team.

The match against Arka was the first one we played without conceding a goal, and we must treat this as an advantage before the next match. Of course, we will be playing against a different team than before, one that is focused on attack and has good players in that formation. The task will be more difficult, but I hope we can repeat the style we played in March and, of course, the result – said coach John Carver at the pre-match press conference.

Our players are therefore travelling to Białystok with two main objectives – to remain on the winning track and to maintain solid defence.

Jagiellonia is definitely a good team and they play well. However, they had a match yesterday. We have analysed their game. I hope we are ready for this match and will get three points – said Alvis Jaunzems at a press briefing.

RIVAL PROFILE: JAGIELLONIA BIAŁYSTOK

Jagiellonia Białystok will also approach the match against our team in very good spirits. Last Thursday, the team led by coach Adrian Siemieniec achieved its main goal and sealed its participation in the Conference League group stage after a 1-1 draw with Dinamo Tirana (4-1 on aggregate). This is a great success for the Białystok club, as Jagiellonia’s players will compete in European cups for the second year in a row. In the last edition of the Europa Conference League, the Białystok team reached the quarter-finals, where they had to acknowledge the superiority of the much higher-ranked Spanish team Betis.

When it comes to local competitions, fans of Duma Podlasia also have no reason to worry, as Jagiellonia has been performing very well since the beginning of the current PKO Bank Polski Ekstraklasa season. Despite numerous personnel changes and the replacement of virtually the entire core of the team before the start of the season, the yellow-and-reds have already found their rhythm and are in fourth place in the league table ahead of their match against Lechia. So far, the players of Duma Podlasia have played four matches, winning three and losing only one. In the last round, i.e. the sixth round, Jagiellonia had a break and did not play their match, and their last league match was against Radomiak Radom in the fifth round, which they won 2-1 away.

An advantage for our players may be the fact that the Białystok team had significantly less time to rest and recover due to a cup match in the middle of the week. However, it is worth noting that the Białystok team has a large squad and, after last season’s experience, is now accustomed to playing every three days. Jagiellonia’s strengths were highlighted at a press conference by our team’s coach, John Carver.

We know what it’s like to play right after a demanding match, but they have a very good and broad squad. If the coach feels that changes are needed, he will probably make them. When you ask if this is similar to our situation before the match in Lubin, it’s something completely different. We don’t have as deep a squad as Jagiellonia. We are curious to see what line-up they will field. They have the ability to put together many good combinations in attack, but I would like us to play the same way we did when we last faced them. As for Pululu, our defenders dealt with him well in the last match against Jagiellonia.

LAST MATCHES AGAINST JAGIELLONIA BIAŁYSTOK

Considering our team’s last five matches against Jagiellonia, the balance of wins favours Białystok, who won three times, drew once and lost once to the white-and-green team. Our players’ last trip to Białystok to the stadium on Słoneczna Street took place in the 9th round of the previous season and ended in a 2-3 defeat for the white-and-green team. However, the last match between these teams gives Lechia fans more reasons for optimism. In the 26th round of the previous season, we hosted ‘Jaga’ at home and beat the former Polish champions 1-0 in style thanks to a goal by Bohdan Viunnyk. It should be noted that our Ukrainian striker has taken a liking to scoring against Jagiellonia, as he found the net in both matches played against this rival last season. So, on Sunday afternoon, we are all hoping for another victory for our team and another goal from the Ukrainian.

OVERALL BALANCE OF MATCHES AGAINST JAGIELLONIA BIAŁYSTOK
