We invite you to read coach John Carver’s statement after the friendly match against Polissya Zhytomyr, which ended in a 1:0 victory for our team.

It’s the second game in the pre-season, it’s part of the process, to where we need to be for that first game.

But what was really pleasing was, against a top side from the Ukraine, who are fifth in their division, we looked really well organised and had some structure, so the information the guys are taking on the training ground, they’re taking it into the game. And it was the whole squad, we made so many changes, everybody played today, which was good, it was nice to see. And even young Adam coming in at right back, he understands his role and responsibility for the team.

It’s nice to keep a clean sheet, I love a clean sheet, and especially scoring the win late on. It’s nice to score goals in the latter stages of the game, rather than concede goals, so it’s good, but collectively every single player who went on the pitch today is working extremely hard, they understand their roles and responsibilities, but let’s not forget it’s still pre-season, we’re still getting ready for that first game, but we’re going in the right direction.

What do we need to focus on?

We need to focus on getting fit, taking the instructions on board that I give them on the training ground with the staff, because the information they get is very good.

So they need to take that on board, and they’re doing that. Because we have young players here, these young players need to be coached, and they’re being coached. And I can see in the short time I’ve been here, I give them instruction and they’re taking it on board.

Now, that’s all you expect. Sometimes you lose a game of football, but it won’t be for the lack of trying. And because of the culture back in Gdansk, if these guys give that effort in every single game, then people will be happy with them.
