The opening minutes belonged to the home side, who tried to impose their tempo from the start. Early in the game Mateusz Wdowiak attempted a shot, but the ball sailed over Lechia’s goal. Moments later Sebastian Milewski tried his luck from distance, though his effort did not trouble Alex Paulsen.
In the 10th minute the hosts won a corner kick. Bartosz Nowak attempted to surprise Lechia’s goalkeeper with a direct delivery towards goal, but the ball ended up in the side netting.
As the game progressed, the White-and-Greens began to grow into the match and became more involved in attacking play. In the 17th minute Tomasz Wójtowicz sent in a dangerous cross that caused problems for Rafał Strączek.
A few minutes later Ivan Zhelizko unleashed a powerful effort from around 30 meters, but the GKS goalkeeper managed to push the ball away for a corner.
Lechia tried to build quick attacking moves and spent more time in possession, though the final pass was often lacking precision. One of the best opportunities of the first half fell to Dawid Kurminowski. The Lechia striker latched onto a through pass from Tomasz Neugebauer, went past the goalkeeper, but his shot hit the side netting.
In the 39th minute the hosts took the lead. After a quick attacking move Mateusz Wdowiak fired a powerful shot that found the back of the net. The score remained unchanged until the break, with GKS Katowice leading 1:0 at halftime.
