It’s time for the Pomeranian Derby. Preview of the match between Pogoń Szczecin and Lechia Gdańsk

This Sunday, 21 September, at 2:45 p.m., we will play another match in the PKO Bank Polski Ekstraklasa league. In the 9th round of league competition, we will face the local team, Pogoń, in Szczecin.

In the last round, our team faced GKS Katowice at Polsat Plus Arena. We played solidly at our home stadium and deservedly won 2–0. Dawid Kurminowski and Camilo Mena scored the goals for our team.

Another league challenge lies ahead – the Pomeranian derby on difficult terrain. Our players remember last season’s match well, which ended in an exciting 3:3 draw, and they know that this time will be just as demanding. After their victory over GKS Katowice, the team is motivated, focused and ready to fight for every inch of the pitch.

If we are talking about what happened recently in Szczecin, it was an open match. I would not want such an open match on Sunday. Our rivals have certainly changed a bit, they have brought in a few new players and it is a different team now. The very fact that there is no coach may also influence some changes in the team. We are focusing on ourselves and what we have to do. We have shown the players a few scenarios of how this match might look, and we will have to adapt. – said coach John Carver at the pre-match press conference.

I think we know our roles and rules. The coaches told us about Pogoń’s strengths. Our rivals have changed their coach, so we don’t really know what to expect. We certainly don’t want to play worse than we did last season. I expect our whole team to perform well. Of course, we learned something from that match, but a lot has changed since then. We are fully focused on this match – said Rifet Kapić at the briefing.

– They are a very experienced group of players who play in the old style. They are characterised by their passing between the lines and are very dangerous if you give them a lot of space, especially Grosicki. We know this player and we know what a legend he is in Poland. I respect him very much, he is certainly one of the best players in the league. As I said, we will have problems if we give him a lot of space, but we have our tactics and we should focus on how to deal with both Grosicki and the other players – added the captain of our team.

RIVAL PROFILE – POGOŃ SZCZECIN

In the previous round, Pogoń lost 0:1 away to Korona Kielce. During the international break, the Szczecin team played a friendly match against Górnik Łęczna, winning 2:1. Pogoń’s last league match at the Florian Krygier Stadium was played on 31 August against Raków Częstochowa. The match ended in a confident 2-0 victory for Szczecin, with goals from Kamil Grosicki and Paul Mukairu. Pogoń is currently in 10th place in the table and is working hard to improve its results in upcoming matches.

During the summer, the club strengthened its squad with several interesting transfers, including our former player Jan Biegański, who spent last season at Sivasspor in Turkey, and former Leeds United player Sam Greenwood. The team was also recently joined by 2018 World Cup winner Benjamin Mendy, a former player for Olympique Marseille, AS Monaco and Manchester City.
