Saturday’s clash between Lechia and Lech ended without points for the hosts, despite coming close to upsetting the reigning Polish champions. After the final whistle, we caught up with Kacper Sezonienko, who received the Young Player of the Month award before kickoff.

Kacper Sezonienko started Saturday’s match in the first eleven for Lechia Gdańsk:

I didn’t play in any friendlies during preseason, and I only got five minutes in the first league game in Zabrze. But I spent the entire week preparing to play as much as possible against Lech and to help us win — unfortunately, we couldn’t make it happen.

The second half changed everything:

After scoring our two goals, we gave Lech too much space and spent a lot of time defending, which definitely added to our fatigue. Early in the second half, we conceded twice right away, and that made things much more difficult. Lech added more goals, and although we managed to get one back late in the game, we still walked away without a single point.

Defensive struggles were the key issue:

I think scoring three goals against Lech is quite an achievement. Like coach John Carver said — we would’ve needed five to win that game. We definitely need to work more on our defense and aim to keep a clean sheet or at least concede just one in the upcoming matches.

What did the coaches say at halftime:

The plan was to stay alert and not sleepwalk through the start of the second half, to come out aggressive and press Lech’s players. That’s exactly what we lacked, and I think that’s why we conceded those goals.
