Lechia Gdańsk’s match against Piast Gliwice ended with a 3:1 victory. After the game, both coaches – John Carver and Aleksandar Vuković – shared their comments.
John Carver – Lechia Gdańsk
Coach Carver’s assessment of the match:
The first half was good from our side and we scored two goals. At halftime, I told the players that the second half would definitely be different. Two weeks ago, we were trailing 0–2 and managed to turn the game around, so today Piast found themselves in a similar situation. For about 20 minutes in the first half, the opponent caused us problems, but we stayed determined. We made some changes and scored a goal, and the pressure was off.
On Friday, I said I would rather play poorly and collect points — and today, after 90 minutes, I can say that it was probably one of our less attractive performances in recent weeks, but at this stage, only the points matter.
Coach Carver didn’t show particular joy or a smile after the match:
Inside, I am very happy. The best feeling for a coach is to sit here after a win.
I’m exhausted, it feels like I played the match myself.
Tomáš Bobček left the field with an injury. What’s the situation?
The substitution was injury-related. We’ll know in a few days how serious it is. Right now, it’s hard for me to assess.
Question about Camilo Mena’s performance against Piast:
You can see how much effort he put into this match and the previous ones. He’s been a driving force for us. Today, we wanted to substitute him earlier, but we had to wait because Elias Olsson was having some issues, and we only had one substitution window left.
I think today’s performance from Camilo Mena was one of his best since I’ve been here.
Coach’s evaluation of Maksym Khlana’s performance:
I’m delighted with Maks and how hard he fought for the team. He worked very hard defensively as well.
What was key in the match against Piast, according to the coach:
At this stage, the most important thing is the three points. Today, we found a way to get them, and that’s what matters most.
Lechia’s three consecutive home wins:
I don’t look back. Today we have our third home win in a row, and we want to keep playing well at home — that’s pleasing. We also need to find a way to pick up points away from home. Sometimes, after the second half starts, you get a second wind, especially if you score a quick goal. I think we showed character, and that’s how we managed to score the third goal and secure the win.
Aleksandar Vuković – Piast Gliwice
Lechia’s win was absolutely deserved. In the first half, the hosts capitalized on two of several mistakes we made. Our second-half performance was more solid — we scored a goal and even hit the crossbar. When it looked like we could come back into the game, we were still missing something. Even in the first half, there was a huge missed chance by Rosołek to equalize at 1:1. To sum up, Lechia was the better team today.
