After a two-week international break, Lechia Gdańsk returned to league action in the PKO Bank Polski Ekstraklasa. On Sunday afternoon, the White-and-Greens travelled to Gliwice to face Piast — and after a dramatic encounter, they secured a 2:1 victory, earning three priceless points.
From the opening minutes, Piast dominated possession, building their attacks from goalkeeper František Plach. Gradually, however, John Carver’s men began to grow into the game. First, Ivan Zhelizko struck the side netting, and shortly after Tomáš Bobček tried his luck but missed the target.
Piast looked for opportunities through Leandro Sanca, but their finishing around Paulsen’s goal lacked precision. In the 41st minute, the breakthrough came for Lechia. After a foul just outside the box, Ivan Zhelizko stepped up and delivered a stunning free-kick — the ball hit the post and bounced into the net, leaving Plach with no chance. Lechia led 1:0 at the break.
Bobček’s golden goal
After halftime, Piast came out aggressively. In the 50th minute, German Barkovskiy equalised, finishing neatly from a cross on the left wing. Buoyed by the goal, Piast took control of the match for several minutes, forcing Lechia to defend deep.
Coach John Carver reacted quickly, making changes to inject energy and attacking intent into his side. And just when it looked like the game was heading for a draw, Lechia delivered a devastating counterattack in stoppage time. In the 90+5th minute, Camilo Mena won the ball in midfield and played a perfectly weighted pass to Tomáš Bobček, who raced through on goal. The Slovak striker kept his composure and slotted the ball precisely into the far corner — securing a dramatic 2:1 win for Lechia Gdańsk.
